Wycombe Wanderers chairman claims Reading FC fans have ‘caused issues’ over Bearwood sale – Reading Today Online

Reading FC , Wycombe Wanderers, Bearwood Park

Wycombe Wanderers chairman Rob Couhig has admitted that Reading FC fans have ‘caused issues’ over the sale of Bearwood Park.

After statements from both clubs last week revealed that they were in negotiations over the sale of Bearwood Park training ground, Wycombe announced on Monday that they were putting the deal ‘on hold’ due to complications over planning permission.

Speaking on the ‘Heroes of HP12’ podcast, Couhig said: ”We’re disappointed, our club will continue to move forward and we will continue to look for a great training ground that fulfils what we want to do for a club and we will hope for the best for Reading Football Club in their journey.

“Part of it was that we were going to lend those folks money this week to help them with their ongoing financial crisis

“In this past week the Reading fans, or at least a small portion of them, have caused issues.

“I don’t know if it’s causing issues, but it has been an uncomfortable situation.

“We don’t need that so we announced that we’re not going forward. I feel bad for them but they will come up with some other solution I suppose.

“I feel bad for us because it would have been the right step forward for us as a club.”

Couhig expanded on some of the problems that Wycombe has faced and the backlash that he and Wycombe received on social media.

He continued: “We live in an age where everybody has an opinion regardless of everybody not having the facts.

“The keyboard warriors that go out and charge off making ludicrous statements.

“When you see people putting stuff all over the gates of the stadium. They’ve limited our ability to sell tickets to Wembley in some ways. It’s just frustrating.

“That’s not the reason we’re doing it, but it’s a reason. The whole atmosphere got to be a bit much.

“They’ve already cost their club three points. I like the fans, I really do and I understand their anxiety.

“It seems to me there is a time for patience. Wait and see until things work out. What is their plan? They’re going to force these people out, who are you going to force to buy it? I don’t understand what their plan was.

“Nobody asks these anti groups what their plan is, what’s the alternative, what are they going to do about the wages? Nobody thinks about this stuff it seems to me.

“It’s a tough issue. It’s a great club and the relationship they’ve had with the ownership hasn’t been good.”
